About the SCM Club
“For the second year in a row, Operations (31%) was the most popular functional role before becoming CEO, followed by finance (21%) and marketing roles (12%). Before 2007, finance had been the most common functional role.” (December 2008, Based on a survey among CEOs of S&P 500 companies conducted by Spencer Stuarthttp://www.spencerstuart.com/research/articles/975/)
This finding illustrates the increasing importance of operations skills in the market place, especially for top managers: if your goal is to lead a company, better make sure you know in details how its operations and supply chain is working!
Supply Chain Management is not just about shipping and logistics. It helps you to understand the picture of a company’s operation and be able to lead a company successfully. A recent example is Apple’s Chief Operation Officer Tim Cook’s “outstanding performance in assuming the day-to-day operations” at Apple while Jobs was on leave. In return, Apple has awarded its COO a bonus valued at $22 million for leading the company while Chief Executive Steve Jobs was on 6-months’ medical leave last year. (Reuter, Fri Mar 12, 2010) Tim is also a MBA with operation management background!
The SCM Club provides an arena for all Sauder MBA students with a particular interest in operations and supply chain topics and careers, including those who are not specializing in SCM. The club keeps its members updated about recent development in the marketplace and provides opportunities to connect with the business community.
The SCM Club plans to host events this year such as:
- Guest Speakers / Discussion Panels / Workshops
- Industry Visits – Local and in U.S.
- Conferences
