Club Write Up

The Humanitarian Club’s main goal is to have fun while giving back to the community. It is open to all members of the MBA program, who are encouraged to bring their volunteer and fundraising ideas to the table. Some of the events that the club has organized over the last year include:

The Race for Shelter

The Race for Shelter (RFS) is an annual “Amazing Race” style event that targets corporate firms who want a fun way to team build. The club works in tandem with UGM and Team Academy, to raise money for UGM. The funds raised go towards UGMs project to get homeless people off the streets and putting a roof over their heads. Last year the club raised over $17,000. http://www.teamacademy.ca/race_for_shelter/index.html. This year, the preparations for RFS are already underway and we plan to conduct it on the 3rd of June 2011.

Bowling for Haiti

We organized a bowling event to raise money for Doctors without Borders, to benefit the Haiti earthquake disaster relief. The event took place at the Arbutus Lanes and consisted of 2 hours of disco bowling. We raised over $1000 that was doubled by the Canadian government.

Quiz night to benefit KIVA

The quiz night fundraiser was a joint effort between the Public Affairs Club, the Humanitarian Club, and Net Impact. It took place at the Wicklow Pub in falsecreek, and consisted of 7 rounds of questions relating to public affairs. We raised over $200 that we lent to several small businesses in developing countries.

Junior Achievers

The Junior Achievers event was organized by a member of the Humanitarian Club, but attended by nearly 20 MBA students overall. Its main goal is to teach high school students business and life skills. As such, the MBA students did a training session beforehand and then taught grade 10 students from Argyle Secondary School for an afternoon. http://www.jacan.org/
